Job Description:
The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) is currently recruiting for the position of Steward. The most important part of being a Steward is 'Outstanding Customer Service.' In fact, your positive attitude about the safety and care of our passengers is the most important part of your job. Exceeding customers' expectations must be a high priority of every crewmember.
This position performs a variety of housekeeping duties (clean toilets, scrub showers using general cleaning chemicals), heavy cleaning (mop and use of electrical cleaning equipment to clean hard and carpeted floors), galley duties (assist with food preparation, dish washing and cleaning), and other duties as assigned aboard the vessels of the System.
Entry level employees are challenged by physically demanding tasks, lifting and carrying various items, frequent stair climbing, and exposure to heat and cold. Employees work a minimum of 12 hours per day (8 hours in the Southwest System), frequently spend the majority of that time on their feet on steel decks, and may also be required to work overtime and at irregular hours.

Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess the abilities listed above.
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Must be eligible to obtain a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD).
Physical ability to perform any required duties of the Steward’s Department.
Upon job offer, must be willing to submit to a physical and drug test.
Emergency medical response training is preferred.
Lifeboatment’s Training and/or Endorsement is preferred.

You must be physically capable of performing strenuous labor for 12 hours or more a day, for 7 consecutive days, lifting and carrying up to 60 pounds repeatedly.
The department may fill positions as soon as qualified applicants are identified.
TRANSPORTATION WORKER IDENTIFICATION CREDENTIAL (TWIC)
Please be aware--this position will require the ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).Proof of TWIC application is required at time of interview.The ability to obtain this credential will require a criminal history/background check. MERCHANT MARINER'S CREDENTIAL
Successful applicants must be able to obtain a valid Merchant Mariner's Credential from the United States Coast Guard (USCG).Proof of MMC application is required at time of interview. The application process takes approximately 6-8 weeks and you cannot go to work without this document.As part of the application process for your Merchant Mariner's Credential, the USCG requires a physical within the last year that certifies that you are fit; a negative drug test; and please remember the USCG conducts a complete background check. As part of the application process, you are required to declare in writing any prior misdemeanors or felonies including DUI.
WORK EXPERIENCE
If using work experience not already documented in your Applicant Profile, also provide the employer name, your job title, dates of employment and whether full- or part-time. Applicant Profiles and Job Qualification Summaries will be reviewed to determine if the responses to the minimum qualification questions are clearly met. • Documentation that you have worked in the hospitality industry (Hotel/Motel/B&B, Restaurant/Bar) as a wait person, bartender, cashier, cook, housekeeping
• Documentation of your cooking skills (your specific responsibilities) for 50 or more people in a commercial setting (excluding fast food and pizza parlors)
• TAM or TIPS card, Food Worker Card
• Basic Safety Training or STCW -95 certificate
A short exercise will be given at the time of interview to confirm efficient and effective English skills.
